Beaphar Canishield contains the active ingredient Deltamethrin, which is gradually released from a polymer matrix and comes to the surface of the collar. The active substance then transfers from the collar's surface to the lipid layer of the dog's skin and coat. Deltamethrin is highly lipophilic (attracted to fats), penetrating through the fatty layer on the skin's surface and spreading over the entire body. The active ingredient continues to migrate from the matrix to the collar's surface and into the dog's skin lipid layer throughout the collar's period of efficacy.
Deltamethrin is a second-generation pyrethroid, a synthetic compound similar to pyrethroids originally derived from extracts of Dalmatian chrysanthemum flowers, Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium. Deltamethrin is neurotoxic to arthropods, including ticks, fleas, and sand flies. Deltamethrin is absorbed through the insect's cuticle (exoskeleton). It enters the nervous system, binds to the sodium channels of nerve membranes
and alters their permeability, leading to prolonged depolarization and hyperexcitability. This causes the so-called "knockdown" effect – the parasite is quickly paralyzed, becomes uncoordinated, and dies. Deltamethrin is less toxic to mammals than to insects because their sodium channels are much less sensitive to pyrethroids.

- Ticks (Ixodes ricinus) for a period of 6 months. Efficacy against ticks was tested under laboratory and field conditions.
- Fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) for a period of 16 weeks. Efficacy against fleas is tested under both laboratory and field conditions. Laboratory studies show 88% effectiveness against fleas up to the 22nd week after collar placement.
- Sand flies (Phlebotomus perniciosus) - vectors of leishmaniasis, for a period of 5.5 months. Efficacy against sand flies was tested under laboratory conditions.
