Cestal plus has undergone several product developments in its 20-year history to better meet changing needs. One of the active ingredients - the bitter praziquantel, for example, has received a special lipid coating in the new Cestal plus chewable tablets. The formulated particles break down in the stomach and intestines. This technology, as well as the added pork liver flavor, makes it possible for 92% of dogs to voluntarily ingest the tablet.
Cestal plus is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic product, with each tablet containing Praziquantel 50mg, Pyrantel pamoate 144mg, and Fenbendazole 200mg. It shows high activity against the most common tapeworms and roundworms affecting dogs:
Tapeworms:
Adult tapeworm forms in dogs and cats usually do not cause clinical signs. However, segments of Dypilidium caninum actively exit the anus and cause itching, which can lead to "perianal rubbing" in dogs. Fleas are intermediate hosts for Dypilidium, so regular external deworming is equally important. The eggs of tapeworms Echinococcus granulosus and E. multilocularis can also develop in humans. Viable larvae are found in so-called hydatid cysts in various organs such as the liver, lungs, brain, or kidneys, causing serious clinical signs and even death in humans.
Praziquantel is the most effective cestocidal agent in human and veterinary practice, showing 100% activity against Echinococcus spp, Taenia spp, Dipylidium caninum. Praziquantel acts against all forms of these parasites (adult and immature)
Roundworms:
Roundworm (nematode) infestation is most common in puppies and kittens. In severe cases, a distended abdomen, acetone breath, tremors, and seizures may be observed. In humans, as a paratenic host, migrating larvae in the lungs can cause a cough that is difficult to treat, while in the eyes, vision is impaired or even blindness occurs. In cases of severe infestation, gastrointestinal signs and even anemia may be observed in dogs. In humans, erythema (redness) and itching may appear due to the penetration of larvae through the skin.
Whipworms (a type of roundworm) are not dangerous to humans but are a common parasite in dogs and can cause weight loss and recurring diarrhea.
Dogs that are infected usually do not show any clinical symptoms. But the regular spread of eggs and worms from infected animals endangers the health of other animals, as well as humans. Therefore, the treatment of our dog friends also serves to prevent human diseases. Small children are especially at risk because they have not yet developed personal hygiene.
Pyrantel pamoate is known to be highly effective against many ascarids (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina - adult and immature forms); hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum, Uncinaria stenocephala - mature forms), with limited activity only against whipworms (Trichuris vulpis). To be effective against them as well, Cestal plus also contains a benzimidazole compound - fenbendazole, which is active against Trichuris (mature) and also shows specific synergy with pyrantel pamoate against nematodes. According to the targeted animal safety tests, Cestal plus tablets have a high safety margin, no adverse reactions have been observed, even at 5 times the recommended dose.
Dosage and administration of Cestal plus: 1 tablet per 10 kg body weight.
Small puppies and small breed dogs:
<2kg = ¼ tablet
2-5kg = ½ tablet
5-10kg = 1 tablet
For larger dogs, the dose is calculated according to weight: 1 tablet/10kg
The tablets are given directly into the mouth or in some attractive food. No fasting is required before and after administration. The minimum age from which Cestal plus can be used is 4 weeks.
The administration regimen is determined by the veterinarian. The frequency of deworming is determined according to the parasite development cycle and the environment in which the dog lives. The risk of infestation is higher in dogs that live predominantly outdoors or spend a large part of their daily lives in nature. They are at greater risk of ingesting carcasses of other animals, feces, and drinking water from puddles. For routine deworming, one treatment is sufficient, but in cases of severe infestation, the dose can be repeated after 14 days.
Cestal plus can be used in pregnant dogs – deworming is recommended 10 days before birth and then, together with the puppies.
