BENEFITS OF FIBRE
Supports gut health
The fermentation of fibre into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) is vital for
maintaining a healthy and diverse microbiota. With colonocytes being replaced every
4-6 days, SCFAs provide the primary energy source for cell renewal and therefore
for normal function.
Stool consistency
Both soluble and insoluble fibres are needed for normal stool formation in the colon. Insoluble fibres (e.g. cellulose) are effective for bulking, while
soluble fibres (e.g. psyllium) have excellent water-absorbing properties, helping to
regulate stool volume and consistency.
Intestinal transit and motility
A combination of different types of fibre is necessary to regulate intestinal transit time.
In addition, the gel-forming properties of psyllium help to increase
stool viscosity, optimizing gastric emptying and
colon transit.
Feeling of fullness
Cellulose has the ability to bind 3.5-10 times its weight in water15, thereby increasing
